Biogas Plants in the UK
According to a new report from the Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA), enough biogas is now being produced by UK biogas plants to power over 1 million homes. biogas plants in the uk
The technology has grown in popularity across the UK, with plant numbers increasing almost 500% in just 5 years.
This increase is largely related to the RHI and FIT schemes launched by the UK government. The RHI and FIT schemes were created to incentivise the production of renewable energy and reduce the use of fossil fuels. You can find out more about the schemes on the Ofgem website.
AD plants are currently reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 1% and employing more than 3,500 people in the UK, but the report suggests that with the correct policy support there is the potential to reduce emissions by 4% and employ over 30,000 people.
A report by the charity WRAP says that the UK AD sector could ‘double or triple in size’ by the end of the decade – there are currently around 500 plants being considered for construction.
